Feline Wellness Care

Wellness exams keep your cat as healthy as possible!

Wellness care is the key to keeping your cat healthy, and regular wellness exams are the best way you can assure a longer and happier life for your cat. Cats are masters at hiding disease, so an annual exam will help to catch health problems early. The wellness exam is an opportunity for you to discuss any concerns you have about your cat’s health with one of our veterinary professionals. Many topics are addressed ranging from nutrition, allergies, oral health, mobility issues, risk of infections and any lifestyle and age related changes. Our expertise is at your disposal.

The Wellness Exams at Hunter Animal Hospital are Comprehensive

During your cat’s wellness exam, our veterinarians will:

  • Obtain a medical history
  • Check vitals and record your cat’s weight
  • Perform a complete physical examination, discuss any findings and make recommendations that may improve your pet´s well-being.
  • Perform a dental evaluation. Dental care is very important for your cat’s overall health, especially as he or she gets older. We visually examine your pet’s teeth and gums for plaque and tartar, tooth weakness and decay. This screening often detects mouth pain and infections that can affect your pet’s heart, kidneys and liver. Click here to read more about the dental care offered at Hunter Animal Hospital.
  • Recommend protection from infectious diseases through judicious use of vaccines based on the age, health and environment of your cat.
  • Screen for the presence of internal and external parasites if indicated.
  • Recommend safe medications to eradicate parasites.
  • Discuss your cat’s nutritional needs.
  • Implant a microchip if desired.

Preparing your Cat for His or Her Visit with Us

We recommend your cat be brought to our clinic in a pet carrier for safe transportation. The best way to prepare your cat for a visit to Hunter Animal Hospital is to get your cat familiar and comfortable with its cat carrier. The best type of cat carrier is the inexpensive hard-sided carriers that open from the top and from the front. A carrier that opens easily from the top allows a cat which is fearful, anxious or in pain to stay in the bottom half of the carrier for exams. Please avoid a carrier that requires a cat to be pulled from the carrier or dumped out for an exam. It should be easy for you to carry and should be seat belted into the car to keep your cat safe.

Help your cat become comfortable with the carrier. You can help your cat become comfortable with his or her carrier by placing it in a room where your cat spends a lot of time, placing familiar soft bedding inside, placing treats, catnip or toys inside the carrier. It may take days or weeks for your cat to trust the carrier. Reward your cat’s desired behaviors. You may want to cover the carrier. Some cats like to see out, while others are less anxious when the carrier is covered with a blanket or towel. See which option your cat likes best by closing the cat inside the carrier in the house and carrying the cat around the house, covered and uncovered.
