Diagnostic Services

At Hunter Animal Hospital, we are serious about early detection of disease. We utilize in-house advanced diagnostic equipment to aid us in making a rapid diagnosis so that we may recommend the best treatment options for your pet. Our in-house laboratory and radiology equipment allows us to provide extensive diagnostic tests during a regularly scheduled wellness exam as well.

Examples of our diagnostic services:

  • Digital Radiology (x-rays)
    • Useful to assess bone and joint abnormalities and injuries
    • Detects the presence of foreign material inside the body
    • Used to screen for abnormalities in the heart, lungs, and urinary and digestive organs
    • Used to screen for cancer
    • Sedation may be necessary to limit stress to your pet and help us to get the highest quality diagnostic images.
  • Ultrasound
    • Allows a veterinarian to look at the organs of the abdomen or chest such as the liver, kidneys, heart or spleen from as many different angles as needed
    • Painless, non-invasive and safe
    • Performed by an ultrasound specialist with state of the art equipment in our hospital, providing convenience, expertise and immediate results. Interpretation of any abnormalities found is done by both the ultrasound specialist and our veterinarians for the most accurate diagnosis for your pet
    • Typically does not require any form of sedation
    • Allows to safely obtain tissue samples by ultrasound guided needle aspirates or biopsy
  • Endoscopy
    • Minimally invasive procedure that aids in diagnosing certain conditions
    • Allows examination of upper gastrointestinal tract, airways, colon, nose and nasal passages
    • Allows veterinarians to take biopsies utilizing specialized instruments inserted through a channel in the endoscope
    • Minimizes time your pet is under anesthesia
    • Your pet typically does not experience pain or discomfort after the procedure
  • In house laboratory staffed by skilled, trained technicians providing:
    • Complete blood analysis by our state of the art blood analyzer
    • Fecal analysis for parasites by flotation
    • Urinalysis
    • Culture and sensitivity
    • Screening tests for Canine Parvovirus, and Feline Leukemia and FIV viruses
    • Tonometry checking for glaucoma
    • Cytologic examination of ear, skin, urine and blood specimens
    • Fungal cultures for possible ringworm
  • ECG and blood pressure monitoring
    • Helps detect hypertension, and to evaluate and stabilize critically ill pets
    • Provides a baseline reading during comprehensive physical exams for older or sick pets
    • Used to assess pets’ condition while under anesthesia
